Dental hygiene assessment
We are a prevention orientated practice and your dental hygiene appointment is a key component in improving and maintaining your dental health. The hygienists at Soar Valley Dental Practice, are all fully trained and we consider them one of the key members of our caring team of professionals. Ash strongly advises his patients to visit the hygienist regularly, as part of their routine preventative care.
At your dental hygiene appointment, one of our hygienist’s will complete a detailed assessment of your plaque control and periodontal health. (That is the health of the tissues that support your teeth i.e. gums and bone support for your teeth). If there are any areas of concern they will discuss these with you and offer treatments to improve and then maintain your periodontal health. The hygienist’s will also monitor your plaque control as adequate biofilm disruption (breaking up of the bacteria in plaque) is imperative to have healthy gums for life.
At your dental hygiene assessment we will:
- Check and amend personal details, plus check and update any medical conditions
- Ask you how healthy YOU feel your teeth and gums have been since your last visit
- Complete an intra-oral examination to check the health of your tongue, lips and cheeks and complete a basic periodontal examination to assess your periodontal health (if problems are discovered, a more detailed examination will be completed)
- Record your plaque control and assess how your individual response to the accumulation of plaque bacteria – you will be shown any areas of concern
- Remove any hard and soft deposits (including any stain)
- Explain what plaque is and how it causes dental disease
- Offer methods, hints and tips to help improve plaque bacterial control and hence improve periodontal health.
