Tooth whitening
What is it?
Tooth whitening can be a highly effective, yet simple way, of lightening teeth without removing any of the tooth surface. It cannot make the colour change, but lightens the existing colour. A tooth whitening agent is used either on the outside or on the inside of your tooth or teeth.
- Like hair and skin, teeth vary in colour. Some are yellower or darker than others, even when they are healthy.
- Teeth sometimes darken if the roots have been diseased. Teeth can also yellow with age and can become stained by food and drinks such as tea and coffee. Some people may have staining inside their teeth. This can be caused by certain antibiotics or tiny cracks in the teeth, which take up the stain.
- There are two methods of whitening teeth. One method is by making custom-made trays which you wear for up to six weeks for approximately two hours per day. The second method is a chair-side procedure which is carried out in one appointment. Both methods are extremely successful and can lighten teeth by up to nine shades.
What will my dentists do?
With the ‘home whitening’ system the dentist will give you a whitening agent to use at home in your trays. You will need to use the trays for approximately four hours per day, for up to six weeks. A dental technician will make the tray from an impression of your teeth that your dentist has taken. Your dentist will check that the tray fits and show you how to use the whitening agent. A photo is taken of the shade of your teeth before commencing treatment and your shade will be reviewed at each appointment as a record of progress over the four-six weeks.
The ‘in-surgery’ system will make your teeth dramatically whiter in around one hour. The procedure is simple. It begins with a short preparation to cover your lips and gums, leaving only your teeth exposed. The dentist then applies the whitening gel, which is designed to be used with a specially designed light. The light and gel work together to gently penetrate your teeth, breaking up stains and discolouration. This procedure is carried out in stages and when the agreed shade is achieved a member of the dental team will give you after-care advice.
Who may benefit from tooth whitening?
Almost anyone. However, treatment may not be as effective for some as it is for others. Your dentist can determine if you are a viable candidate for this procedure through a thorough oral examination, including a shade assessment.
Is whitening safe?
Yes. Extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe. In fact, many dentists consider whitening the safest cosmetic dental procedure available. Tooth whitening is not recommended for children under 16 years of age, during pregnancy or whilst breast feeding.
Tooth whitening does not affect existing fillings, crowns, veneers or bridges.
How long do the results last?
By following some simple post whitening care instructions, your teeth will always be lighter than they were before. To keep your teeth looking their best, we recommend flossing, brushing twice daily, and occasional touch-ups. There are kits available that are designed specifically to keep your teeth their brightest. They are only available through your dental professional.
What are the benefits?
Tooth whitening is a highly effective, yet very simple way of improving the appearance of your teeth without removing any of the natural tooth surface. Whitening is a better option than a crown or veneer if you want to lighten the colour of healthy teeth.
